Hyderabad: Political parties in Telangana rushed to name candidates in different assembly and parliamentary constituencies with Wednesday being the last day for filing of nominations.
The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) named eight members of Parliament (MP) and 36 members of legislative assembly (MLA) candidates in its third list on Tuesday.
Party president K. Chandrasekhara Rao, popularly known as KCR, will be contesting on an assembly and parliamentary ticket in the forthcoming elections. He will be in the fray from Medak parliamentary constituency, left vacant after the incumbent former actress Vijayashanti joined the Congress. The party earlier said KCR would be contesting from Gajwel assembly constituency.
His daughter, K. Kavitha, who heads the cultural wing of the party, will be contesting from Nizamabad parliamentary constituency.
Balka Suman, the party’s student wing president, will contest from Peddapalli parliamentary constituency while academic Sitaram Naik from Kakatiya University has been named as the party’s candidate for Mahbubabad constituency. Rasheed Sharif will be pitted against All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul (AIMIM) candidate Asaduddin Owaisi in the Hyderabad parliamentary constituency. The constituency has been an AIMIM bastion for the past 30 years.
AIMIM also announced candidates for five assembly constituencies on Tuesday.
The party earlier named candidates for seven assembly constituencies including five sitting legislators in Hyderabad.
TRS also gave tickets to six candidates who joined it only in the morning. Former CPI-M legislator Nomula Narasimhaiah will be contesting from Nagarjunasagar assembly constituency while R. Gurunatha Reddy, who quit the Congress after being denied a place in the final candidate list released on Monday evening, is being fielded from Kodangal assembly constituency.
Kolanu Hanumanth Reddy (Qutubullapur), M. Rammohan Goud (L.B. Nagar), Prem Kumar Dhoot (Goshamahal) and Mutha Gopal(Musheerabad) are the other new candidates who landed TRS party tickets.
CPI MLA Banothu Chandravathi, who was denied a ticket by the left party, will now contest on a TRS ticket from Wyra assembly constituency. She joined TRS only on Friday. Lawyer M. Sahodar Reddy, who led advocates during the statehood agitation, was chosen to contest from Parakala constituency.
The party, founded in 2001 with Telangana statehood as its sole agenda, is hoping to come to power in the wake of creation of the state that will be officially formed on 2 June. The party has been trying to take credit for formation of the state after it spurned a merger proposal by the Congress party. It is going solo in the upcoming elections while the Congress has announced a tie-up with Communist Party of India (CPI) and the other rival Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
TRS has traditionally been strong in north Telangana, with pockets of influence in other parts of the state.
Telangana will elect candidates for 17 Lok Sabha and 119 assembly constituencies on 30 April.
TRS, TDP and BJP are expected to announce the names of more candidates this evening.
The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) late Tuesday night announced its candidates for parliamentary and assembly constituencies in Telangana. The party, which took a stand to keep the state united, is fielding contestants from 13 of 17 Lok Sabha constituencies, and 79 of 119 assembly constituencies in the region.
Former director general of police V. Dinesh Reddy will contest from the Malkajgiri parliamentary constituency that has turned into a prestige issue for various parties. Lok Satta party president Jayaprakash Narayan has filed his nomination on Monday to contest from Malkajgiri, the largest constituency in the country in terms of the number of voters. The constituency has over 29.5 lakh voters.
Congress is fielding union minister Sarve Satyanarayana, who is the incumbent, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is fielding the grandson of former prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, Sudha Kiran. Academic turned politician K. Nageshwar will also be in the fray from that constituency as an independent.
