KCR hints at ‘water war’ with Seemandhra

TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday asserted that the new Telangana government will not release water for the Seemandhra region, neither for drinking or farming. This is because the irrigation projects that have come up there are 'illegal'.

The TRS supremo also warned that the Polavaram dam would not be allowed to come up unless the design was modified and threatened to oppose the division of AP Bhavan in Delhi, which he claimed 'rightfully' belonged to Telangana.

"Let me make clear one thing in my capacity as president of a political party that is going to come to power in Telangana. Our government will not release water downstream to the irrigation projects illegally constructed in Seemandhra," he announced at a press conference.

Analysts said that KCR has upped the ante because the Congress party, with whom he is in direct conflict in the polls, will also claim credit for creating Telangana state. "It is a question of convincing the voters about who did more for Telangana. This would not have happened if both the parties had gone to the polls together," the analyst said. Formal talks between the two parties have broken down on many issues such as seat distribution and the question of who would be chief minister.

KCR elucidated that many of the projects that have come up in the Seemandhra region, including Polavaram, do not have clearances from the Union environment ministry and that there were inter-state disputes over the displacement of tribals, that are still to be resolved. "We have been fighting for the rights of Telangana for the last many years. My stand seeking justice for Telangana has evoked a bitter response from the political parties, particularly the Telangana Congress leaders. But they cannot stop me from fighting for Telangana," he thundered.

Apart from Polavaram, the projects in the Seemandhra region that KCR described as 'illegal' are Dowleswaram, Pulichintala, Velugonda and Prakasam Barrage. Analysts were of the view that control and regulation of the water will be with the GOI and, like the other states, the Telangana government too would have to abide by the water sharing agreements laid down by various tribunals.
